No diagnostic material was recovered from the feature, although it was post-dated by the Anglian ditch 012AD00766, and must therefore predate this phase (i.e. either an early Anglian or a Roman feature).

Discussion

This was a small, round (1.22 m in diameter) slightly raised ?hearth or oven base. It was constructed mainly of locally-occurring red chalk ( a material which was deliberately quarried for this purpose), with some larger white chalk fragments. During its use, some of the white chalk fragments had been burnt, taking on a blueish hue. The superstructure was probably constucted of red chalk, mixed with clay and daub, some fragments of which were found on the base of the structure. No diagnostic material was recovered from the structure, although it is of note that the animal bone recovered was not burnt.

Although the section does not give clear evidence for a stratigraphic relationship, some burnt material deriving from the structure was found near the base of ditch 012AD00766, indicating that the filling of the ditch post-dates the construction of the hearth.
